NEW YORK, Nov 2 (Reuters) - A record number of law school graduates took the New York bar exam in July, the state's Board of Law Examiners said Friday, with 67.6 percent of candidates passing the test.

All told, 11,734 prospective lawyers sat for the two-day exam, which was administered July 24 and 25. The previous record was 11,557, set in July 2010.

The overall pass rate was slightly lower than for the July 2011 test, when the rate was 69.2 percent.

A record 2,998 foreign-educated test takers, approximately one-quarter of the candidates, registered a 36 percent pass rate, almost the same as last year.

Eighty-three percent of first-time takers from American Bar Association-accredited schools passed the exam, including 85 percent of New York state law school graduates.

Test takers were informed of their results by email Friday, and the board's website includes a link for candidates to check their results online.
